David Shongo's 'Café Kuba - Who Dared to Awaken the Dead Memory' is een cinematografische en akoestische beleving die de stemmen van Kinshasa's café-ambulanten vastlegt - mobiele koffieverkopers die zowel toeschouwers als deelnemers zijn van de dagelijkse gesprekken in de stad. 'Café Kuba' werd gefilmd tijden de weken vol spanning na de verovering van Goma door de M23-rebellen. De film dompelt kijkers onder in de verhalen van een stad in verandering, waar het geheugen niet statisch is, maar voortdurend wordt hervormd door de huidige realiteit. Shongo maakt gebruik van omgevingsopnames en een snel evoluerende soundtrack, om een portret te maken van deze anonieme stemmen. Dit portret van Kinshasa's levendige herinnering weerspiegelt hoe persoonlijke en collectieve geschiedenissen voortdurend worden opgehaald, opnieuw worden geïnterpreteerd en beleefd.

David Shongo komt persoonlijk langs om zijn film voor te stellen in het kader van de tentoonstelling 'From Dead to Living Memory' in de Tommy Simoens Gallery.

In samenwerking met de galerij brengt David Shongo de soundtrack van Café Kuba live, gevolgd door een panelgesprek met David Shongo, Bambi Ceuppens en Matthias De Groof.

David Shongo’s 'Café Kuba - Who Dared to Awaken the Dead Memory' is a cinematic and sonic experience that captures the voices of Kinshasa’s café ambulants—mobile coffee vendors who serve as both observers and participants in the city’s everyday conversations. Filmed in the tense weeks following the M23 rebels’ capture of Goma, 'Café Kuba' immerses viewers in the shifting narratives of a city where memory is not static but constantly reshaped by present realities. Through ambient recordings and an evolving musical score, Shongo transforms these anonymous voices into a portrait of Kinshasa’s active memory, mirroring how personal and collective histories are continuously retrieved, reinterpreted, and lived.

David Shongo will visit Lumière Antwerp to introduce his film personally to the audience, as a part of the exhibition 'From Dead to Living Memory' in the Tommy Simoens Gallery.

In cooperation with the gallery, David Shongo performs the soundtrack of 'Café Kuba' live during the film screening, followed by a panel discussion by David Shongo, Bambi Ceuppens and Matthias De Groof.
